Visiting Fellow: Gloria Groom

‘Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity’

Each year, a well-known art historian provides a seminar under the heading of the 'Van Gogh Museum Visiting Fellow in the History of Nineteenth-Century Art'. This year, the Visiting Fellow was Gloria Groom of the Art Institute of Chicago. She provided the three-day seminar ‘Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity: Rethinking the Role of Fashion in Vanguard Art’.

Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity
She set up a three-day programme on the basis of the Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity exhibition, which was held earlier in Paris, New York and Chicago. The seminar covered the way in which the Impressionists incorporated the latest Paris fashion in their paintings.

Van Gogh Museum Visiting Fellow
The Van Gogh Museum and the University of Amsterdam have organised the seminars as part of the Art History Master’s course since 2007. The aim is to enable students to research an important theme from the collection field of the Van Gogh Museum in depth.
