Restoration ‘Peasant family at the table’ by Jozef Israels

Cleaning and restoration
Especially for the new interior of the layout of the Van Gogh Museum, Josef Israels’ painting Peasant family at the table (around 1882) has been restored. The painting can now shine again close to Vincent Van Gogh’s Potato Eaters (1885), which also shows a peasant family at the table.

Paint removal and retouching
The strongly discoloured old varnish layers on Josef Israel’s painting were removed as much as possible during the treatment and the painting was then given a new varnish layer. Older damage was then retouched on that varnish layer, using a synthetic material that is easy to remove if this proves desirable at a later date. In this way, parts that were processed during an earlier restoration and now show discolouration are made less visually disturbing.
