FashionWeek with Mattijs van Bergen and Borre Akkersdijk

Friday Nights
How do you translate Van Gogh’s paintings in terms of fashion? On 24 January, visitors could find out at the Van Gogh Museum during a Friday Night programme with a Fashion Event theme. The evening focused entirely on the Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam. Fashion designer Mattijs van Bergen presented his colourful autumn-winter collection, inspired by the paintings of Van Gogh. Only the day before, he had taken part in the official opening of FashionWeek Amsterdam with the same show. Textile developer and fashion designer Borre Akkersdijk was also a guest. He gave workshops in the museum studio.

Mattijs van Bergen
Mattijs van Bergen, winner of the Dutch Fashion Award 2012 and the International Fashion Incubator Award 2012, explained how he addressed the development of his designs, which he based on the paintings in the Van Gogh Museum. He also stood his models next to the paintings. In this way, visitors could see for themselves how the works of art inspired his new line.

Borre Akkersdijk
In the workshop by Borre Akkersdijk, visitors could try their hand at fashion design for themselves. Together with this multi-talented trend-watcher and textile designer, they could work on a special item of clothing, in which the contours of Van Gogh’s paintings were not only made visible, but also tangible.
